Osteoporosis means a medical condition in which the bones become brittle and fragile from loss of tissue, typically as a result of hormonal changes, or deficiency of calcium or vitamin D. Osteoporosis occurs when bone density decreases. This affects the structure and strength of bones and makes fractures more likely.

Bones continuously renew itself during childhood. In that age new bone formation is quick and faster than bone loss. The process continues till the age of 20-30. Bones are important as they support our body structure, protect the vital organs and helps us move freely.
Bone loss is very critical and happens during third decade of the life. But by adopting particular life style one can surely stop bone loss. By involving into regular exercise , giving up smoking if already smoking, not drinking alcohol on large scale and ensuring sufficient quantum of calcium and vitamin D can help in restricting process of bone loss.
Osteoporosis occurs when bone formation is very slow or the bone removal is very speedy or with the combination of both. Weakening of bones is more common and affecting more women than men. As per the record of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, osteoporosis affects 5% of men and 25% of women aged 65 and more. One of the factor considered responsible for more more bone loss In women is menopause reducing the estrogen, a hormone which protects the bones.
Bone density is very important for the total health of the person. Bone density is directly linked to the breaking of bones. Bone density is at its peak in the age range of 20 of the person. Age has impact on the bone density.
There are certain activities which may promote bone density. Weight lifting and strength training promotes new growth of bones and also maintain the existing bone structure. Vitamin C protects the bones from damage. Eating yellow and green vegetables is highly advisable. For good bones health people must ensure sufficient calcium intake every day. They may get calcium through milk, yogurt, cheese, leafy vegetables like kale, beans. Proper weight control is also important for bone density. Sudden weight loss or gain is very harmful. People also should have more proteins in their diet to solve bone problems. Avoiding smoking is also has good impact in protecting bone density. Similarly excessive drinking alcohol needs to be avoided.
