Salt and your Health
Salt is essential ingredient we consume every day in some form. In breakfast, meals, dinner whatever you name it. Salt is made up of sodium and chloride. Sodium in salt is harmful for your health. The essential minerals in salt act as important electrolytes in the body. They help with fluid balance, nerve transmission and muscle function.
EFFECTS OF HIGHER SALT
Eating more sodium increases the risk of high blood pressure and the resultant heart attack or heart disease. Controlling the portion of salt intake every day is most important for healthy heart. With the intention of lowering blood pressure and heart disease, the Heart Foundation has recommended less than 5 g.of salt ( less than a tea spoon a day).
Higher salt intake can have many adverse impacts on life. It can trigger many diseases like heart failure, heart attack, stroke, kidney problems and kidney stones, thickening of heart muscle and even osteoporosis. Stomach cancer or the gastric cancer, as it is called is linked with higher salt intake. It is the third largest cause of cancer deaths worldwide. It is observed that people with higher intake of salt have 68% higher risk of stomach cancer, compared to those who have a low salt intake.
Avoid biscuits, muffins, burgers, pasta, pizza, meat, poultry products, bread, breakfast foodsmade from cereals and grains. Many restaurant foods or packed and processed foods lincluding snack foods, canned and instant soups, processed meat, pickeled food, soy sauce contains higher salt.
REDUCE YOUR SALT
People should concentrate on low sodium containing foods- like fruits and vegetables. Many manufacturers use higher salt in product as a preservative and also for enhancing flavour. You should avoid the foods listed below containing higher salt.
You need to cut on salt in packaged products. Read the labels carefully – and prefer “no salt” “low salt “ or “reduced salt” varieties of products. However, there are some serious doubts about the true benefits of sodium restriction.
It is true that reducing salt intake can lower blood pressure, especially in people with a medical condition called salt-sensitive hypertension.
But, for healthy individuals, the average reduction is very subtle. If you are a healthy person eating mostly whole foods there is no need to curb salt intake. Even eating low amount of salt is also highly risky and bad for your health.
