Chronic inflammation is also referred to as slow, long-term inflammation lasting for prolonged periods of several months to years. Generally, the extent and effects of chronic inflammation vary with the cause of the injury and the ability of the body to repair and overcome the damage.

Inflammation is part of the body’s immune response. Infections, wounds, and any damage to tissue would not be able to heal without an inflammatoryresponse. Chronic inflammation can eventually cause several diseases and conditions, including some cancers and rheumatoid arthritis

Inflammation is a biological response of the body that protects against harmful internal and external stimuli and begins to heal. It is part of the body’s immune system and protects against infections, wounds and tissue damage. The inflammations can be sharp and become heavy quickly. For example, acute inflammation can cause diseases and conditions such as sinusitis, sore throat due to cold, acute bronchitis, etc. Inflammation can be chronic if there are unwanted toxins in the body, such as cigarette smoke or excess fat. These conditions can include rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and non-infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, gastric ulcer, hepatitis, etc.

In the world majority of the population die due to chronic inflammatory diseases like stroke, chronic respiratory diseases, cancer, and diabetes etc.

What causes chronic inflammation?

Stress: stress causes brain activity that can lead to physical pain that can cause an inflammatory reaction in the body.  Stress also results in many cases with sleep disorders, which is key factor associated with chronic inflammation.

Poor nutrition: certain foods such as simple sugars, high fructose corn syrup, refined flours, high-fat foods, processed meats, fried foods, etc. they can trigger an inflammatory reaction in the body. Therefore, the consumption of these foods should be limited.

Unhealthy lifestyle: alcohol consumption, smoking, a sedentary lifestyle and obesity lead to stress in the body, causing an inflammatory reaction.

Pollution: pollution damages cells, which can cause inflammation.

Smoking – Cigarette smoking is responsible for lowering the production of anti-inflammatory molecules thereby increasing inflammation.

Low Sex Hormones – This is another important factor aggravating the chronic inflammation.  Sex hormones like testosterone or estrogen helps to supress the production and secretion of several pro inflammatory markers.

How can you relieve chronic inflammation?

Regular physical activity: regular exercise for 30 to 50 minutes helps you lose weight and mobilize your joints. This reduces the risk of chronic inflammation.

Balanced and nutritious diet: include all food groups in your diet. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, magnesium, carotenoids, antioxidants and lycopene, since these nutrients are anti-inflammatory. Cut sugars and grains from your diet and also eliminate processed vegetable oils.

Relieve stress: if you sleep at least 6 to 8 hours a day, try stress reduction techniques, say what you feel, etc., to help maintain and reduce stress. This reduces the risk of inflammation.

Reduce exposure to Toxins –  widespread adoption of pesticides in genetically modified crops  results in piling up of toxins in your body.  Reduce the toxins  intake in different ways.   Eat more and more organic foods.

Be Hydrated – It is most essential to drink lot of water to flush out toxins from the body.  Drink minimum half your body weight in ounces of water.  If you can drink more water , it is far better for your body and health.   You can go closer to one full ounce of water for every pound of body weight.  It also helps to maintain the electrolyte balance within and out of the cells.
